Proteins increase the body’s metabolism by increasing the calories needed to digest them. Some healthy choices of protein are canned tuna, peanuts, venison, turkey breast, and cashews.

One cup of canned tuna has 39g of protein. Be careful what you add to it since mayo and dressings can add empty calories. I buy my tuna in olive oil. The oil keeps the tuna moist and allows me to use less mayo when mixing it. I used to eat it on bread but now just cut up cucumbers and tomatoes in a bowl, add the tuna, and eat it with a spoon. I know this sounds strange but after a few times it grows on you and you will not even miss the bread.

Peanuts have high levels of mono-unsaturated fatty acids called oleic acid which helps to lower LDL (bad cholestrol) and increase HDL (good cholestrol). They are an excellent source of vitamin E and B-complex vitamins. Just 1oz of peanuts (about a handful) contains 7g of protein and more than 2g of fiber.

Venison has a low fat content and is in high protein. Many people are switching from commercially grown and processed beef to venison. Venison contains no additives, antibiotics, or steroids. It can be used to substitute beef in meat loaf and lasanga. A 1-inch venison steak contains 16g of protein.

Turkey Breast is another good source of proteins to help boost metabolism. A 4oz serving of turkey contains about 32g of protein. One serving of turkey will provide you with 65% of your recommended daily intake of protein. A bonus to eating turkey is that it contains trace minerals that aid in cancer prevention. It also has selenium which helps keep your thyroid and immune system healthy.

Cashews contain about 4g of protein per ounce. Three-fourths of the fat in cashews is unsaturated fat called Oleic acid. A 1/4 cup of cashews also contains over 20 percent of your daily value of magnesium which helps regulate your blood pressure and reduce muscle cramps and spasms.

Proteins maintain and repair every cell in your body and help speed up metabolism. You benefit when your heart, skin, bones, and organs benefit from protein. Foods that increase your metabolism are high in protein. Your best sources of proteins are meats, nuts, and fish. A healthy adult should get about 10-35 percent of their calories from proteins.
